A little wine...

Help! Who knows the names of some good wines? I mean wine snob wines. Am writing a fic where Tesla makes an appearance & I just need to know what sort of wine would he prefer. I don't think he'd turn away any wine in reality, no matter his opinion of it, though. lol!

Mods, if this is not the right place to post this, I will not be offended if you need to remove it. An answer first would soften the blow...

Which year are you talking? The Phylloxera blight occurred in the mid-1800s, so you could do reasonably well by choosing a wine that was grown pre-blight - a bottle of 1845 Château Lafite (NOT Rothchild as they didn't buy the estate until 1866) would do nicely. Actually, you could get away with that any time up to Tesla's death.

A few more options here. For dessert, even Hannibal Lecter liked a well-aged Chateau d'Yquem.

Thank you, that will definitely help. It's just a small scene between Henry & Tesla, Henry goading Tesla & Tesla responding in kind, naturally, but I'm not a wine drinker. Do you mind if I ask, what wine name might someone like Henry be familiar with that would give Tesla fits? Something good quality but not THE BEST, for example. I will be sure to give you credit for the help in my author's notes! :D

I'd go for a region that Tesla would think "inferior". American wine was looked down on by many (and it's fairly widely accepted that the US vines brought the Phylloxera into Europe) yet there are some excellent ones from there - from our friend Wikipedia you have

In 1858, The Illustrated London News described Catawba as "a finer wine of the hock species and flavor than any hock that comes from the Rhine" and wrote that sparkling Catawba "transcends the Champagne of France.

so a date not too long after 1858 (up to about 1875) would be fine for serving a Catawba hock. If you'd prefer a red, you could get away with an Almaden Cabernet Sauvignon. Chilean Errázuriz Riesling would also make a true connoisseur check and probably shudder - it would have been a very nice wine but it's not from Europe.

Do you have a rough year for your action? That would help a lot.

Also, feel free to have one of them throw around something from Proverbs 23 vs 29-35:

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”

It looks like you've been given ideas already. Some wines are really terrible so I definitely think there are some Tesla wouldn't drink. He does say not to bring back Mongolian wine after all. ;)

True! There are some wines he wouldn't touch, I'm sure. He'd likely rather die than drink wine from a box, for example--lol. I can picture him, though, complaining about it for a span of time before finally going, "Oh, all right" and drinking it with a sneer on his face or claiming it'll do if you drink it fast enough. :D He might even take a few sips, throw it at the wall and storm out to find something to "wash the taste" from his mouth. Great, now I'm getting ideas for Tesla fic! This wouldn't be a problem if my little plot bunnies would just go to the nice doctor and get themselves spayed/neutered...

... wine comes in a box? I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW.

LOL! I used to work at a restaurant that tried serving wine for a time. We filled the chilled glasses from from the box (or rather, the pouch inside the box). I'm not a big wine fan; in fact, I much prefer the hard stuff if I'm drinking, but even I know something's wrong with serving wine from a box.

I don't even drink and that's just WRONG.
